Infant death toll reaches 82, in West Bengal
West Bengal, India: Deaths of seven infants have been reported from West Bengal’s Malda sub-division hospital, in last twelve hours. With this, the death toll has reached an overall figure of 82 in merely twenty days time. Of these 82 deaths, thirty nine were reported in the last week alone.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), has expressed shocked to take note of these increasing infant deaths and has insisted upon upgrading of the infrastructure at the Malda hospital, immediately.
The scenario in the hospital is not just daunting, but also grim; with mothers and relatives of the dead infants crying in sheer grief. The hospital administration is being blamed for severe unhygienic conditions, which the patients’ relatives suspect to be the prime cause for the death of their infants.
The dirty floors, unwanted stray cats and dogs wandering around and staff-shortage in the hospital, certainly, call for a comprehensive improvement in the premises as well as medical care.
